Datti Baba-Ahmed Dumps Labour Party, Announces Move To PRP

The 2023 Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has revealed plans to exit the party and join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), citing internal disagreements and a shift from its founding principles.

He made the disclosure on Tuesday, April 29, during an appearance on Channels Television’s programme Politics Today, where he explained that his decision was driven by unresolved issues within the party.

“I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow [Wednesday]. There is more to it. When there was real peace in the Labour Party, was when they posted back.

“They redeployed someone with a specific purpose, and because of the antecedent of the individual to make life difficult, particularly for me. What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed stated that his resignation would take effect at midnight, adding that he has already chosen his next political platform.

“I am leaving the Labour Party [at] midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old,” he stated.

The PRP, established in 1978 by the late Aminu Kano, is regarded as one of Nigeria’s oldest political movements, with roots in progressive political ideology.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Baba-Ahmed said any candidate seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu must have a credible track record, free from allegations of corruption or electoral malpractice.

He also called on Nigerians with integrity, especially those who have remained outside the political space, to participate actively in governance, while faulting citizens for failing to demand accountability from leaders.

On opposition politics, he dismissed the possibility of a single consensus presidential candidate, describing it as “impossible”.

However, he expressed openness to broader alliances, mentioning figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, and suggested that the PRP could become a viable alternative capable of challenging the APC if effectively structured.
