Delta Police Officer To Face Murder Charge For Killing Suspect  — PPRO

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that the officer captured in a viral video shooting a suspect in Effurun will be prosecuted for murder, following an internal review of the incident.

Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, disclosed this on Wednesday, April 29, during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, stating that the officer, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, has been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for further disciplinary action.

Edafe said the conduct of the officer was highly unprofessional and described the incident as difficult to rationalise within normal operational behaviour.

Responding to questions about why the officer’s identity was initially concealed in an earlier statement, Edafe explained that it was done in line with standard professional practice.

Public outrage has continued to grow following the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, whose death was recorded in a video that circulated widely on social media.

The police explained that the incident happened on April 26, 2026, during an operation by officers of the Effurun Area Command acting on intelligence reports that the deceased was involved in the movement of a suspected illegal firearm.

According to the Command, the intelligence indicated that the suspect was attempting to transport a parcel allegedly containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.”

However, the operation turned fatal after the officer in charge allegedly discharged his weapon in violation of operational procedures.

“The police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” the Command stated.

The police added that the matter has now been escalated for prosecution, with disciplinary and legal processes underway to ensure accountability.
