‘Democracy Has Prevailed’, APC Hails FCT, Kano, Rivers Election Victories

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, has congratulated party supporters and candidates following the outcome of the February 21 elections conducted in the Federal Capital Territory, Kano and Rivers states.

Yilwatda, in a post on X on Sunday, February 22, described the results as a reflection of the party’s strength and unity.

“I heartily congratulate our teeming supporters of the All Progressives Congress in the Federal Capital Territory, Kano, and Rivers States on the successful and peaceful conduct of the Saturday, 21st February 2026 polls.

“The victories recorded are a clear testament to the resilience, unity, and grassroots strength of our great party,” he wrote.

He specifically congratulated the party’s chairmanship candidates who secured victories across the FCT, noting that five APC candidates won in AMAC, Kuje, Abaji, Bwari and Kwali, while the Peoples Democratic Party candidate clinched victory in Gwagwalada.

“The people have spoken through the ballot, and democracy has prevailed,” he added.

Yilwatda also acknowledged the success of APC candidates in the state constituency by-elections held in Kano and Rivers states, congratulating four State House of Assembly candidates who emerged victorious.

He commended party leaders and stakeholders for their discipline and dedication, urging continued unity in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had earlier declared Joshua Ishaku of the APC winner of the Bwari Area Council chairmanship election with 18,466 votes.

Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was also returned elected chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council after polling 40,295 votes.

In Gwagwalada Area Council, however, the PDP candidate, Mohammed Kasim, won with 22,165 votes, defeating the APC candidate, Yahaya Shehu, who scored 17,788 votes.

Similarly, Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the APC won the Abaji Area Council election with 15,536 votes, while Nuhu Daniel secured victory in Kwali Area Council with 17,032 votes.

The Supervising Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Kuje Area Council election, Abubakar Dambo, attributed the delay in announcing the chairmanship result to challenges encountered in two wards, stating that collation was ongoing in Central and Kabi wards, with results from eight of the ten wards already declared.

The development followed a statement by President Bola Tinubu congratulating winners of the elections conducted across the FCT, Kano and Rivers states.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended INEC, security agencies and voters for the peaceful conduct of the polls and urged the winners to serve with humility and patriotism.

Reports, however, indicated low voter turnout in parts of the FCT, while opposition parties raised concerns over the conduct of the elections.

The PDP also inaugurated a special legal team to handle election petitions arising from the FCT Area Council polls.
