Diezani Alison-Madueke Faces London Court Over Bribery

Former Nigerian Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke has appeared again in a London court as prosecutors continue to present evidence in a high-profile corruption and bribery case with international reach.

The Crown claims Alison-Madueke received cash payments and luxury benefits in exchange for influencing oil and gas contracts, she however denied all allegations.

On Monday, the 9th of February, 2026, jurors were presented with testimony from a luxury furnishings retailer and a former housekeeper, as prosecutors aimed to demonstrate how extravagant purchases and property use were allegedly routed through intermediaries.

The former Petroleum Minister faces multiple counts of bribery stemming from a lengthy investigation. The alleged offences took place between 2011 and 2015, during her tenure as Nigeria’s oil minister, while she also maintained a UK residence.

The UK National Crime Agency (NCA), responsible for tackling serious international and organised crime, claims she received the bribes in Britain.

Alison-Madueke is accused of accepting “financial or other advantages” from individuals linked to Atlantic Energy and SPOG Petrochemical both companies that secured contracts with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) or its subsidiaries, according to prosecutors.

The allegations include £100,000 ($137,000) in cash, chauffeur-driven cars, private jet flights to Nigeria, refurbishment work, and staff costs at multiple London properties. Additional counts claim she received school fees for her son, luxury items from stores such as Harrods and Louis Vuitton, and further private jet flights.

Alison-Madueke served as President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) from 2014 to 2015 and has faced legal scrutiny internationally, including in the United States.

She has been on bail in Britain since her first arrest in October 2015 and was formally charged in 2023 with accepting bribes a charge she continues to deny.
