Distillers Renew Protest Over Sachet Alcohol Ban At National Agency

Distillers operating under the umbrella of the Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association on Tuesday staged another protest at the Lagos office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), marking their fifth demonstration in 2026 over the continued sealing of their companies.

The workers—comprising both junior and senior staff—blocked the entrance of NAFDAC’s office along the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway, preventing vehicles from accessing the premises as they demanded an immediate reopening of their factories.

Armed with placards bearing messages such as “Stop destroying local manufacturers,” “NAFDAC should release products put on hold,” and “Tinubu does not want jobs to be lost,” the protesters chanted solidarity songs while expressing frustration over the ban on sachet alcohol beverages and PET bottles below 200ml.

The demonstrators said the policy has crippled production activities and placed thousands of jobs at risk, insisting that authorities should reconsider the enforcement.

As of the time of filing this report, none of the protesters had addressed the press, while no official from NAFDAC had come out to engage the crowd.

The protest follows ongoing disagreements over the sachet alcohol policy.

Although the workers claim that the Federal Government directed a suspension of the enforcement, NAFDAC Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, has maintained that the agency received no formal instruction to halt the action.

During earlier demonstrations, the protesters had warned they would escalate their protests and occupy major roads if the ban was not lifted.

Tensions remain high as affected companies and workers await clearer government directives on the controversial regulation.
