Tension is rising in Niger Republic after a National Guard patrol unit vanished following a confrontation with suspected terrorists near the country’s border with Mali.
According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the incident on Wednesday, April 23, the patrol had been operating in the dangerous Mangaïze–Tongo Tongo–Tiloa triangle when it engaged fighters from the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) four days ago.
The troops reportedly sent a distress signal to their base in Oualam during the clash. However, since that alert, all communication has ceased.

Families of the missing soldiers are now in distress, desperately seeking answers, while authorities remain silent.
As fear grows over the fate of the troops, the lack of official communication from both the Nigerien government and National Guard command has only deepened public anxiety, particularly in the conflict-prone border region where armed groups frequently launch attacks.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from military officials or government authorities.
