…as President Tinubu orders his probe, directs him to hand over to deputy gov (operations)
Operatives of the Department of State Services, on Friday, arrested the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele.
Emefiele’s arrest followed his suspension by President Bola Tinubu earlier on Friday night.
The apex bank governor was reportedly picked up by DSS operatives in Abuja on Friday night.
A Director in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey, had announced in a statement Emefiele’s suspension by President Tinubu.
The statement read, ” President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, from office with immediate effect
“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
“Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms. “
Recall that early this year First News had reported exclusively that the DSS had unearthed fresh allegations against Emefiele, whom it earlier accused of involvement in various acts of terrorism financing, economic crimes of national security dimension and monumental fraud.
Several other “damning” allegations against the suspended CBN governor, as revealed in preliminary investigations by the DSS, were also contained in the security reports later submitted by the secret police to the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari.
Emefiele, however, shunned several invitations from the DSS for questioning, hiding under a purported “Presidential Order” from former President Buhari insulating himself and other CBN chiefs from any probe by the secret police and other security agencies.
