DSS Links Nnamdi Kanu to Killings, Cannibalism, Illegal Radio Station

A prosecution witness in the ongoing terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has alleged that the secessionist’s incendiary broadcasts on Radio Biafra were directly linked to widespread violence and the killing of security personnel in the South East.

Testifying before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, the Department of State Services (DSS) operative, codenamed PWDDD, claimed that between 170 and 200 security agents — including police, military, and DSS personnel — were killed as a result of Kanu’s directives.

Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the witness alleged that Kanu had, through Radio Biafra, issued orders to IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), to target and eliminate security operatives and attack public infrastructure.

“The defendant directed his followers to attack security agents and ensure his late lieutenant, Ikonso, was buried with 2,000 human heads,” the witness claimed.

Radio Biafra Illegal, Says NBC

The DSS operative also told the court that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) confirmed that Radio Biafra had no broadcasting license in Nigeria and that the German-made transmitter used for the broadcasts was smuggled into the country without proper regulatory approval.

He explained that the DSS recovered the transmitter from a premises in Ubuluisiuzor, Anambra State, and subsequently invited NBC officials to inspect the device in Abuja.

Awomolo tendered a certified true copy of the NBC’s report, which confirmed the transmitter’s illegal status. The court admitted it as evidence.

Gulak’s Murder Tied to Kanu’s Orders — Witness

In a chilling account, the witness linked the May 30, 2021 killing of Ahmed Gulak, a former presidential aide, to Kanu’s alleged order for IPOB to enforce a stay-at-home directive with force.

He narrated how IPOB militants, at a roadblock near Obiagwu, Imo State, stopped Gulak’s vehicle, interrogated its occupants about their ethnicity, and upon discovering Gulak could not speak Igbo, executed him after identifying him as a Muslim due to a prayer mark on his forehead.

The DSS operative said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area and the vehicle’s driver confirmed these details. He added that Gulak’s body was evacuated from the scene in the DSS team’s vehicle.

Cannibalism, Beheadings for Rituals

The witness further alleged that DSS investigations uncovered horrifying rituals conducted by ESN operatives for spiritual fortification, including eating human flesh and using the heads of 10 girls to prepare charms.

According to him, one arrested ESN commander, Uzuoma Benjamin a.k.a. “Onye Army”, confessed to these atrocities. He said the group also attacked police stations and homes of traditional rulers, while hijacking vehicles to carry out operations.

Kanu’s Alleged Role and Evidence Trail

The DSS official told the court that Kanu personally inspected the smuggled transmitter and even recorded a video to show IPOB members, many of whom contributed funds for its purchase.

He added that the transmitter was stored on the premises of one Benjamin Madubugu, who was later charged for illegal possession of firearms after DSS operatives found weapons under his mattress.

Under cross-examination by defence lawyer Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), the witness admitted that he could not determine the exact date the transmitter entered the country and had no record of its importation.

When asked about Radio Biafra’s foreign registration, the DSS operative acknowledged that the station might have been registered in London but insisted that the transmissions received in Nigeria were via the smuggled equipment.

He also confirmed that the Imo State Government’s claim that Gulak’s killing was politically motivated did not form part of their investigation findings.

At the end of the witness testimony, Justice Omotosho adjourned the case to June 19 for the prosecution to present its next witness.
