In a dramatic turn of events, officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), along with the notorious Dragon Squad and members of the Nigeria Police Force, have stormed the Cross River State House of Assembly, seizing control of the complex.
This move comes in the aftermath of the impeachment of the Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Anyambem, on allegations of gross misconduct and financial misappropriation.
The atmosphere at the Assembly has been tense for months, with simmering discontent among members over the Speaker’s alleged mismanagement and conduct within the legislative body.
The dissatisfaction culminated in over 20 members signing up for his impeachment, a motion spearheaded by Effiong Ekarika of Calabar South 1, and seconded by Charles Omang.
Following the successful impeachment, chaos erupted as the mace, symbolizing the authority of the Speaker, was seized by the members, further escalating the situation.
The presence of the DSS, Dragon Squad, and police forces marks a significant escalation in the ongoing power struggle within the Assembly, raising concerns about the stability of governance and democracy in Cross River State.
