The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a health advisory to American citizens in the country following the confirmation of a case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a type of Ebola, in Nigeria.
The advisory, published on the mission’s official X account on Wednesday, October 21, urged citizens to observe recommended health precautions, particularly those who may have travelled to areas affected by an Ebola outbreak.
The development follows confirmation by the Federal Government of an Ebola case involving an individual who travelled to Nigeria by air from Uganda. Nigerian health authorities have commenced contact tracing and other public health measures to limit the possibility of further transmission.
The US Mission advised Americans who believe they may have been exposed to the virus to contact their healthcare providers before visiting a medical facility if they develop symptoms associated with Ebola.
“If at risk for Ebola, alert your healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms consistent with Ebola to receive guidance prior to presenting for care,” the advisory stated.
The mission also cautioned travellers against confusing malaria symptoms with those of Ebola, noting that the two illnesses can present similar signs.
“Continue to take malaria prophylaxis as recommended by your doctor. Symptoms of malaria can mimic symptoms of Ebola, leading to preventable health scares,” it added.

Americans returning from locations experiencing an Ebola outbreak were advised to monitor their health for three weeks.
“Monitor your health for 21 days following travel to an area experiencing an Ebola outbreak,” the mission said.
The advisory further encouraged citizens travelling or residing in Nigeria to review their medical evacuation arrangements in case they become seriously ill while abroad.
“Check with your travel insurance provider about medical evacuation options should you fall ill while overseas,” the advisory stated.
The mission also directed American citizens to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for further information on Ebola and travel-related health precautions.
For additional guidance, citizens were encouraged to consult the US Embassy’s Nigeria country information page, which provides general health information and details of medical service providers.
Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities continue to trace contacts linked to the confirmed case and strengthen surveillance as part of efforts to prevent further spread of the virus.
