The management of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, has expelled three students found in possession of firearms during the institution’s recent Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Michael Awoke, announced the decision on Saturday, October 18, 2025, during the inauguration of the newly elected SUG executives at the university’s main campus.
According to Professor Awoke, the students were apprehended by security operatives after being caught with guns and live ammunition during the election.
He said the act was intended to intimidate voters and disrupt the electoral process.
“This issue of coming to the university environment with guns must stop,” the Vice-Chancellor warned.
“Using firearms to intimidate lecturers or fellow students will not be tolerated. Anyone found engaging in such acts will face immediate expulsion and possible prosecution.”
The expelled students were identified as Azubuike Lawrence of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Enyinnaya Ibe Kenneth of the Department of Architecture, and Njoku Joshua of the Department of Animal Science.

The university stated that the matter had been handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
Professor Awoke said the management’s action was aimed at sending a clear message that violence, cultism, or any form of criminal conduct would not be condoned on campus.
EBSU authorities reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a peaceful and secure learning environment, urging students to uphold discipline and abide by the institution’s code of conduct.
