Ebonyi Targets NIGERCEM Revival, Inaugurates Action Committee

The Ebonyi State Government has constituted a 15-man committee tasked with reviving the long-dormant Niger Cement (NIGERCEM) in Nkalagu.

Governor Francis Nwifuru made this known during a Sunday service, on the 29th of June, 2025, at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki.

The committee includes Mrs Catherine Ogbu, Professor Adline Idike, Idu Igariwey, Professor Ben Odoh, Sunday Eze, and Senator Chris Nwankwo.

Other members are Senator Ken Eze, Senator Antony Ani, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Engr. Elias Mbam, Senator Sonni Ogbuoji, Barrister Roy Umahi, SAN, Senator Obinna Ogba, Senator Sylvanus Ngiji Ngele, and Chief Ben Okah.

In the governor’s words: “The committee should liaise with the core investor and shareholders to work out modalities for the immediate commencement of operations in the company which has been moribund for several decades. The committee has two weeks to provide solutions to the problem.

“Reactivation of the NIGERCEM Nkalagu was part of my campaign promises when I visited Nkalagu. I assured them that the factory will be revived within my first tenure in office.”

Governor Nwifuru also emphasized his commitment to modernizing Abakaliki, in line with its original master plan.

According to a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr Monday Uzor, the government has scheduled a town hall meeting to deliberate with key stakeholders on the best way forward.

He also instructed the Ministry of Capital City to enforce compliance among property developers to preserve the city’s structural design.

Additionally, the governor said land would be allocated at Ezzangbo Industrial City to people ready and able to build factories.

He urged Ebonyi indigenes to return home and invest, to help grow the state’s economy.
