Edo Communal Clash Claims Seven Lives, Police Restore Calm

The Edo State Police Command has reported that seven individuals have died and six others have been injured due to a communal clash between the Gbelemonti and Maidoti communities in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area.

A statement from the Command’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Moses Yamu, indicated that authorities received a distress call on February 21 regarding the violent altercation.

“In response, operatives from the Iguobazuwa Police Division, along with the Nigerian Army and local Vigilantes, were quickly dispatched to the scene,” Yamu explained.

The security team transported the injured to the hospital, where seven were confirmed dead, and six others are currently undergoing treatment.

The police assured that their collaborative security efforts have effectively contained the situation and restored calm to the affected areas.

Commissioner of Police Betty Otimenyin has launched a thorough investigation to uncover the cause of the conflict.

“No stone will be left unturned in determining the circumstances surrounding this tragic and unnecessary incident,” Yamu stated.

Highlighting the importance of resolving disputes through legal means, Yamu encouraged residents to pursue appropriate channels instead of resorting to violence.

The Edo State Police Command reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining peace and order while closely monitoring the situation in the area.
