The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has revealed its intention to shut down all public universities in Nigeria indefinitely starting this Friday, 21st of November, 2025.
The announcement was made via a brief statement posted on the union’s official X account (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday., the 18th of November, 2025, it stated that this drastic measure will be enforced if the Federal Government fails to meet all its demands.
A key part of these demands includes fair remuneration and improved working conditions for lecturers. The union emphasizes these changes are necessary to halt the ongoing exodus of academic talent from Nigerian universities.
In its public post, the union was unambiguous about the imminent action: “All universities will be closed nationwide till further notice on Friday,” the union wrote on X.

Furthermore, reports indicate that ASUU has rejected the 35 per cent salary proposal by the Federal Government.
This impending action follows a temporary halt to union activities last month.
Recall that in October, ASUU suspended its two-week warning strike to allow for the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and to address other outstanding issues affecting the university system.
