Education Ministry Debunks NEMIS Hack Report

The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed reports alleging a cyberattack on the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS), insisting the platform remains secure and no data was compromised.

The Ministry clarified the position on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, following reports that suggested a breach after some users encountered browser security warnings while accessing the system.

In a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the Ministry described the claims as false, stressing that NEMIS was not hacked and its database remains intact.

It said the alerts were caused by a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate configuration issue at the hosting level, which temporarily affected secure access to the platform.

The Ministry noted that the glitch was purely technical and did not involve unauthorized access, data loss, or exposure of sensitive information.

It added that the system’s integrity, confidentiality and availability were not affected.

According to the Ministry, its technical team worked with the hosting provider to resolve the issue and restore normal service.

It also said SSL-related browser warnings are not evidence of a cyberattack but can result from routine configuration issues.

NEMIS remains the Federal Government’s central platform for managing education data used for planning, policy and decision-making.

The Ministry said the platform is supported by continuous monitoring, security controls and periodic assessments.

It also referenced the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), describing it as key to strengthening data governance and evidence-based planning in the sector.

The Ministry urged media organizations and the public to verify information from official sources, warning that unverified reports could cause unnecessary concern.

It reaffirmed its commitment to strong cybersecurity, transparency and accountability in education data management.
