Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have begun investigating a suspected fake lawyer, John Anoruo, over the alleged use of a forged seal belonging to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos.
Anoruo, who reportedly runs a legal and educational consultancy in the Ikorodu area, was arrested on Monday, April 20, 2026, by operatives of the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2.
This was made known in a statement by the anti-graft agency and shared on its Facebook page on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the case against him originated from a petition he submitted to the anti-graft agency on September 22, 2025, purportedly on behalf of clients against the management of Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited. However, further scrutiny by the EFCC revealed that both the initial petition and a subsequent letter of withdrawal dated March 5, 2026, carried what has now been identified as a forged NBA seal.

During interrogation, Anoruo allegedly admitted to obtaining the fake seal from an undisclosed business centre within Lagos.
The suspect, 55, also claimed he earned a law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka through evening classes but acknowledged that he never attended the Nigerian Law School, a mandatory requirement for legal practice in Nigeria.
The EFCC said Anoruo would be formally charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
