Two sons of the former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on Thursday, present at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in the United Kingdom when their father was again brought to court.
Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice were arrested last week for allegedly trafficking and attempting to harvest the organs of an “underaged” boy.
Channels Television reports that although the couple’s trial was adjourned till July 7, 2022, it was fast tracked.
Ekweremadu’s wife had reportedly requested the court allow her appear alongside her husband because she had not seen him last Thursday’s hearing, but the court declined her request.
Ekweremadu was, however, remanded in custody as the prosecutor argued that as an influential person, the Nigerian lawmaker posed a flight risk in the case involving a child and modern slavery.
Twenty four hours earlier, Senate President Ahmad Lawan had announced Federal Government’s decision to hire lawyers to defend the Ekweremadus.
The Senate President also announced that a delegation would meet with the couple in London over the trial.
The couple’s ordeal began when they attempted to get a kidney donor for his ailing daughter.
UK prosecutors have continued to insist that the Ekweremadus brought in a minor from Nigeria for the purpose of harvesting his kidney.
