The All Progressive Congress (APC) governors have pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to permit the coexistence of the old and new naira notes in order to lessen the pain of Nigerians.
In a Hausa-language interview with select journalists on Friday, Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai claimed that while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had destroyed almost N2 trillion in old notes, it had only printed N300 billion, which he claimed was insufficient.
El-Rufai said that even if the CBN had wanted to implement the cashless policy, it should have printed half of what it mopped up, which should be N1 trillion, as a start. He was joined by his counterpart from Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje.
He claimed that they informed the President that because of a lack of patronage, the public are suffering and traders are losing their goods.
He made reference to tomato vendors who traveled to Lagos with their goods but received no payment since no one was willing to buy.
