Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has delivered a severe critique of the current federal administration, calling it “the worst federal government in Nigerian history.” He made the claim in an interview with Deutsche Welle Hausa while visiting Katsina on Monday, though the footage was made public on Tuesday.
El-Rufai, known for his outspoken political stance and reformist background, did not mince words as he expressed deep dissatisfaction with the state of governance, economic management, and national security under the present leadership.
While he stopped short of naming specific individuals, his message was a direct indictment of the ruling government’s performance.
“We have never had it this bad. In terms of governance, transparency, economic direction, and even basic law and order, this administration has failed woefully,” El-Rufai declared.
He went further to highlight the rising cost of living, increasing unemployment, and what he described as a “complete lack of vision” at the federal level.

The former minister under President Obasanjo’s administration also criticized the erosion of public trust, stating that the government’s failure to deliver on key promises has left Nigerians disillusioned.
Political analysts are already interpreting El-Rufai’s remarks as a significant shift in tone from within the political class, especially given his former affiliations with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
His statement has sparked widespread reactions across social and political platforms, with some praising his courage, while others accuse him of political opportunism.
Despite the controversy, El-Rufai reaffirmed his commitment to democratic accountability, urging Nigerians to demand more from their leaders. He called for reforms, civic engagement, and credible leadership in the country.
