…block Lekki toll gate
Inspite of the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force, #EndSARS protesters on Monday morning continued their protest in Lagos, causing gridlocks in different parts of the state.
The protesters blocked the Lekki Toll Gate section of the Lekki-Epe Expressway, leaving commuters and motorists stranded while many had to trek long distance to their destinations.
All the lanes of the Lekki-Expressway were blocked and the traffic jam extended to Ajah and Victoria Island on opposite sides.
Motorists going to Ajah and Lekki had to make a detour to pass through the Oniru Estate but they ran into another gridlock.
The protesters also caused serious traffic jam in the Ogba area of the state as there was a standstill on many of the roads in that part of the state.
After days of protests against the brutality and extrajudicial killings by SARS operatives, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Sunday afternoon, announced the disbandment of the police unit.
Adamu said a new policing arrangement to replace the now-defunct police unit would be announced “in due course”, adding that all officers of the disbanded SARS have been redeployed with “immediate effect”.
But the protesters on Monday urged police authorities to carry out psychological evaluation and re-training of all disbanded SARS officers before they are redeployed.
They also demanded the release of all arrested protesters, justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensation for their families.
The protesters also demanded salary increase for police officers and the establishment of an independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reports of police misconduct within 10 days.
