Enugu State House of Assembly has dropped the proposed controversial Pension Bill for former governors and their deputies.
The lawmakers discarded the bill on Tuesday following opposition and pressure from the general public for the bill to be dropped.
This is coming after the bill scaled through the first reading at the state House last week Thursday. If the bill was passed, the state would be spending more than N1.1 billion annually to pay ex-governors and their deputies’ pensions while over N1.25 billion would be used to purchase vehicles for the five former governors and their deputies.
However, the bill was stepped down following a motion by the Leader of the House, Ikechukwu Ezugwu, who is the sponsor of the bill.
He said the House should heed the cry of the citizens who are not in support of the implementation of such a bill.
The motion was seconded by Onyinye Ugwu, the Deputy Leader of the House.
Meanwhile, the speaker, Edward Ubosi, faulted the bill saying it contains lots of provisions that are not constitutional, such as paying salary to the spouses of retired governors and deputies.
