The Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) has announced the cancellation of its monthly clean-up exercise scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2024.
This decision was made to accommodate state-wide funeral rites for the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, which will also take place on that day.
In a statement released on Friday, Andreas Gebauer, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Water and Waste, stated, “The Enugu State Waste Management Authority has cancelled the state monthly clean-up exercise, which was scheduled to hold on Saturday. The cancellation was due to the state-wide funeral rites in honour of the late President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, scheduled to be held the same Saturday, October 26, 2024, in Enugu.”
ESWAMA has urged residents to continue maintaining cleanliness in their environment.
They advised, “Ndi Enugu to always keep their environment clean and bag their waste properly before disposal to make the evacuation easier for the evacuators,” adding that “all inconveniences regarding the Clean Up cancellation are highly regretted.”
The funeral rites for Chief Iwuanyanwu are set to commence on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, with his burial scheduled for November 1, 2024.
His son, Jide, confirmed his passing, stating, “Chief Iwuanyanwu died on Thursday, July 25, 2024, after a brief illness. He was aged 82.”
In September, Senator Ben Obi, chairman of the Central Burial Committee, announced that the deceased would receive full funeral rites in an exceptional burial ceremony.
