Enugu Gov Approves N80,000 Minimum Wage for Workers

In a significant move to enhance the welfare of its workforce, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah announced on his X handle (formerly Twitter) on Thursday that he has approved a new minimum wage of N80,000 for state workers, effective October 2024.

“I have just approved a minimum wage of N80,000 for Enugu workers, effective October 2024,” Mbah stated. “We appreciate the hard work and sacrifices of the state’s workforce and will continue to prioritise their welfare in line with our campaign promises.”

This announcement comes as various states across Nigeria have begun to review and adjust their minimum wage policies in response to economic pressures and the rising cost of living.

As of October 23, 15 states have announced a new minimum Wage.
While Lagos and Rivers set their minimum wages at N85,000, Akwa Ibom approved N80,000, and Abia N70,000, aiming to improve the financial conditions of their workers.

However, not all states have made similar commitments. States like Imo and Sokoto have yet to announce their new minimum wage figures, leaving many workers anxious about their financial stability amidst increasing economic challenges.

As discussions continue on fair compensation, Enugu’s proactive approach stands out as a commitment to safeguarding workers’ rights and ensuring a livable wage.

The decision has been met with positive feedback from labor unions in Enugu, who see it as a step in the right direction towards improving the standard of living for workers in the state.

Governor Mbah’s administration has emphasized its focus on economic empowerment and workers’ welfare as part of its broader agenda.

As more states deliberate on their wage policies, the spotlight remains on how these decisions will impact the overall economic landscape and the livelihood of workers across the nation.
