EPL: Chelsea, West Ham Fined £625,000 After Late-Game Brawl

Chelsea and West Ham United have been fined £325,000 and £300,000 respectively following a mass confrontation during their Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge in January.

The incident occurred in added time after Chelsea forward João Pedro reacted to a shove from West Ham winger Adama Traoré on Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.

Players from both sides became involved in heated exchanges before referee Anthony Taylor dismissed West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo for grabbing João Pedro by the neck, following a lengthy VAR review.

The Football Association (FA) said both clubs failed to ensure their players did not behave in an improper, provocative, or violent manner during the incident. Both Chelsea and West Ham admitted the charges.

An independent regulatory commission described the episode as a “serious incident” involving several Chelsea players.

The commission noted that Cucurella sought to provoke Traoré, contributing to the confrontation, but said this did not justify Traoré’s reaction.

It also highlighted that three Chelsea players were seen attempting to incite the crowd.

While Todibo’s red card for violent conduct was upheld, the commission found no other West Ham players acted violently.

However, several West Ham players behaved improperly and provocatively, contributing to the overall incident.

Both clubs’ previous breaches of FA Rule E20.1, which prohibits improper, offensive, violent, or provocative behaviour, were considered in determining the fines.

The confrontation came shortly after Chelsea completed a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2, with Enzo Fernández scoring an injury-time winner before tensions escalated.
