A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Joe Igbokwe, has raised fresh concerns over what he calls the dangerous rise of ethnic bigotry across Nigeria.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 30, Igbokwe described the trend as alarming and warned that many Nigerians are not recognising the severity of the situation.
“Good morning Nigerians! Ethnic bigotry is growing hopelessly like wildfire in Nigeria and our eyes are not open to see the danger,” he wrote. “I pray that the veil covering our eyes will be removed so that we can see clearly. Make we de play ooo.
His concerns drew a sharp response from Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election, who echoed Igbokwe’s warning and expressed frustration over the apparent silence of those in power.

“I have been screaming against this and it is one major pillar of The Alternative,” Showunmi stated. “No one who thinks deeply can be happy with the madness being tolerated and those in charge are doing nothing to signal enough is enough!”
He further warned that the failure to confront the growing ethnic divisions could have serious consequences.
“Let us pray they have a containment strategy in case things blow up in all our faces. How we pretend not to see the danger beats me,” he added.
Both men stressed the need for urgent attention from Nigeria’s leadership to address the underlying ethnic tensions threatening the country’s unity.
