Ex-CBN Governor, Emefiele, released on bail from prison

In a significant turn of events, former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has been released from the Kuje Correctional Centre after meeting the conditions for his N300 million bail.

Emefiele, who faced allegations of procurement fraud totaling N1.2 billion, secured his release on Friday, December 22, 2023.

The spokesperson for the Kuje Correctional Centre, Adamu Duza, confirmed the news, stating, “He (Emefiele) has met his bail conditions, hence he has no reason to remain in our facility.”

Emefiele fulfilled the bail conditions, which included providing two sureties with certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama District of Abuja.

Despite objections from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Justice Hamza Muazu granted the bail, emphasizing that Emefiele must deposit all his travel documents with the court registrar and remain within the Abuja Municipal Area Council. The trial is set to commence on November 28.

In a surprising development, the Special Investigator, Jim Obazee, probing the CBN, submitted a report to President Bola Tinubu on December 9, 2023, alleging that Emefiele and others embezzled billions of naira and committed various financial offenses. The report accused Emefiele of fraudulent cash withdrawals, financial misconduct in the redesign of the naira, and holding a substantial amount in the United Kingdom.

As Emefiele prepares for trial, these revelations cast a shadow over his tenure at the CBN, raising questions about financial integrity and accountability at the highest levels of Nigeria’s economic institutions.
