Police in Ondo have arrested a 50-year-old man identified as Emmanuel in Ondo town, for allegedly raping an 80-year-old woman.
The suspect who claimed he had just been released from prison custody had been arrested by the police.
Emmanuel allegedly gained entry into the woman’s room through a window at Lotogbe Street, Ondo West Local Government Area, threatened her with a dagger and raped her.
It was learnt that the suspect entered the victim’s room under the pretence of collecting some herbs at the back of the house.
Residents said it was the cry of the victim that attracted people who broke the door open and caught the suspect naked.
Children of the victim were said to have relocated their mother from the area because of embarrassment.
The suspect, who pleaded with his victim for forgiveness, said he was just released from prison.
“I don’t know what has come over me. I was just released from prison before the strike because of this bad behaviour. I have been doing it for a long period of time. Please, forgive me,” he pleaded.
But the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Tee-Leo Ikoro, said it was not a case of rape.
The police spokesman said although it’s true that the suspect had been in the habit of stealing, especially phones from the elderly, and in this particular case, he was caught and given a thorough beating.
Ikoro said the police arrested the suspect and had begun investigation into the matter.
