Ex-lawmaker, Farouk Lawan jailed seven years for collecting $500,000 bribe from Otedola

A High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory, on Tuesday, sentenced a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Farouk Lawan, to seven years imprisonment.

The court had jailed Lawan after finding him guilty of soliciting bribe from billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, during the probe of fuel subsidy in 2012.

The convicted former lawmaker had chaired the ad-hoc committee which probed fuel subsidy under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Otedola had accused Lawan of demanding $3 million for Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, his company, to be delisted from those being probed.

Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission had indicted Lawan of collecting $500,000 bribe from Otedola.

The former lawmaker, however, denied it.

But on Tuesday, Justice Angella Otaluka convicted Lawan on three-count charge.

The charges bothered on him obtaining money from Otedola.

The former lawmaker was sentenced to seven years for counts one and two while he was sentenced to five years for count three.

The sentences are to run concurrently.
