Ex-Minister Ngige in EFCC Custody, Not Kidnapped, Says Aide

Former Minister of Labour Chris Ngige’s media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, has dismissed rumours claiming that the former Anambra governor was abducted, confirming instead that he is with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Chukwuelobe said he had been contacted by several people seeking clarity on the situation.

He explained in a Facebook post on Wednesday, December 10, that, “I have been receiving calls in the past hour from friends and journalists seeking the veracity of the news making the rounds that His Excellency, Dr. Chris Ngige, former governor of Anambra state and immediate past minister of labour and employment, ‘has been kidnapped.’”

He stressed that the reports were incorrect. “Ngige is with the EFCC. He was not ‘abducted’ or ‘kidnapped’,” Chukwuelobe stated, noting that more information would be provided later.

As of press time, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale is yet to publicly confirm the news.

Ngige recently survived an attack on his convoy on November 27 along the Nkpor–Nnobi road in Idemili North.

Gunmen dressed as security operatives opened fire on the escorts, killing a woman who was filming the incident and injuring a police officer and several civilians.

Ngige was not travelling with the convoy during the attack.
