The former military governor of Rivers State, Brig. Gen Anthony Ukpo is dead.
Ukpo died at 74 in his Asi Ukpo Calabar Hospital in the early hours of Monday, after a brief illness, according to a source from the family.
Born on July 16, 1947, in the Okpoma, Yala, Northern Cross River State, the late General was Minister of Information and Culture, and then Governor of Rivers State from August 1986 until July 1988 during the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida.
Ukpo, a Catholic member, died in his private hospital in Calabar early Monday due to an undisclosed ailment.
