Former Senator representing Abia Central, Nkechi Nwaogu, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after a dispute over the party’s senatorial primary in Abia State.
Nwaogu, who previously served in the House of Representatives for Osisioma Ngwa/Obingwa/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency, confirmed her exit in a telephone interview on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
She said her decision followed alleged irregularities in the APC primary that produced Emeka Atuma as the party’s candidate for Abia Central, insisting the process in her area was not properly conducted.

“In my zone, there was no election… when I saw the shenanigans… I knew they are losing touch,” she said.
Following her resignation, Nwaogu moved to the NDC, where she is expected to contest the party’s senatorial primary scheduled for Friday, in a bid to return to the Senate under a new platform.
Her defection adds to growing political realignments in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as parties continue to grapple with internal disputes over primaries and nominations.
