Ex-Super Eagles Star, African Football Icon, Kanu Nwankwo, Celebrates 49th Birthday

Former Super Eagles captain and African football great, Kanu Nwankwo, turned 49 August 1, marking another milestone in the life of one of Nigeria’s most iconic footballers.

Widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted African players of all time, Kanu enjoyed a decorated career that spanned over a decade and saw him win major titles at both club and international level.

Nicknamed “Papilo” by fans, Kanu was a key figure in Nigeria’s football golden era, winning the Olympic gold medal in 1996 and captaining the Super Eagles during various international campaigns.

He also earned over 80 caps for the national team and scored some memorable goals that endeared him to millions.

At club level, Kanu made history as part of Ajax’s UEFA Champions League-winning squad in 1995, later playing for Inter Milan before making a lasting impact at Arsenal.

During his time with the Gunners, he became a fan favourite with his flair, vision, and ability to turn games around, notably scoring a sensational hat-trick against Chelsea in 1999.

He later featured for West Brom and Portsmouth, winning the FA Cup with the latter in 2008.

In 1996 and 1999, Kanu was named African Footballer of the Year, cementing his place among the continent’s best.

Beyond football, Kanu is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly through the Kanu Heart Foundation, which has provided life-saving surgeries for children with heart conditions across Africa.
