FA Cup: Semenyo Nets on Debut as Man City Pulverise Exeter 10-1

Manchester City thrashed Exeter City 10-1 in the FA Cup third round on Saturday as new signing Antoine Semenyo marked his debut with a goal at the Etihad Stadium.

The Ghana forward, who joined City from Bournemouth on Friday in a reported £65 million move, scored in the second half of a ruthless display by Pep Guardiola’s side. Injury-hit midfielder Rodri also found the net, scoring his first goal since May 2024.

City opened the scoring in the 12th minute through teenage defender Max Alleyne, who prodded home from close range for his first goal for the club. Rodri doubled the lead in the 24th minute, lashing in from distance after Semenyo’s effort was blocked.

Exeter’s task became increasingly difficult as own goals from Jake Doyle-Hayes and Jack Fitzwater in the 42nd and 45th minutes widened the gap before half-time.

City continued to dominate after the break, with Rico Lewis volleying home in the 49th minute following another Semenyo involvement. The forward then scored his debut goal five minutes later with a clinical finish.

Tijjani Reijnders added City’s seventh goal in the 71st minute with a curling effort from the edge of the area, while Nico O’Reilly headed in the eighth from a Lewis cross. Seventeen-year-old Ryan McAidoo struck the ninth goal in the 86th minute from outside the box.

Exeter managed a consolation when George Birch blasted into the top corner, but City had the final say as Lewis scored again in stoppage time to complete the rout.

The result marked City’s biggest win since their 10-1 victory over Huddersfield in 1987. They also recorded a 9-0 win over Burton in 2019.

Guardiola was absent from the touchline as he served a one-match ban, but City still fielded a strong side that included Erling Haaland. The emphatic victory ended a run of four games without a win in all competitions, following three consecutive Premier League draws that left City six points behind leaders Arsenal.
