FAAN Investigates Viral Osubi Airport Altercation

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing a confrontation between an Aviation Security (AVSEC) officer and a passenger at Osubi Airport in Delta State, assuring the public that any staff found guilty of misconduct will face disciplinary action.

FAAN announced the development in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, following the widespread circulation of the footage on social media.

The incident, which allegedly involved the harassment of a female passenger during a disagreement with airport security personnel at Osubi Airport, also known as Alfred Diete-Spiff Airport, sparked widespread criticism online.

Many social media users called for an independent probe and improved treatment of passengers at Nigerian airports.

The episode comes at a time of heightened public attention on airport operations across the country. Recent aviation-related controversies, including disagreements over airport transport reforms and concerns about passenger service delivery, have intensified discussions on customer experience and regulatory oversight within the sector.

According to FAAN, its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Olubunmi Kuku, has ordered an immediate investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

The statement read, “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken note of the video circulating on social media regarding an interaction between Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel and a passenger at Osubi Airport.

“The Managing Director/Chief Executive views the matter with utmost seriousness and has directed an immediate investigation to establish all the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident”, the statement partly read.

FAAN said the findings of the investigation would determine its next course of action and assured the public that any confirmed violation of its rules or professional standards would attract appropriate sanctions.

It stated, “FAAN remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, safety, security and customer service across all its airports.

“The outcome of the investigation will guide any further action that may be considered necessary. Should the investigation establish any breach of FAAN’s operational procedures or professional standards, appropriate administrative and disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with the Authority’s regulations.”

The authority also reaffirmed its commitment to openness, accountability and the protection of passengers’ interests.

“The Authority appreciates the public’s interest and assures all airport users that every complaint is treated with the seriousness it deserves.

“FAAN remains committed to transparency, accountability and continuous improvement in the delivery of safe, secure and passenger-focused airport services,” the statement added.
