FAAN Raises Cargo Port Charges, Fees Jump From ₦7 To ₦20

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has increased cargo port charges from ₦7 to ₦20 per kilogram across all airports under its management.

The authority said the revision is part of a broader effort to modernise airport revenue structures, improve infrastructure, and sustain cargo operations amid rising operational costs and inflationary pressures.

The previous rate had remained unchanged for nearly two decades, leaving it well below current economic realities.

The increase was announced on Friday, January 30, 2026, and took effect immediately, with full enforcement of the revised tariff regime beginning February 2.

FAAN emphasised that the change affects only cargo tariffs and does not alter passenger-related fees.

Officials added that the new charges align with international aviation standards and are intended to support the long-term sustainability and development of Nigeria’s airport facilities.

Industry stakeholders have expressed mixed reactions, warning that higher cargo fees could lead to increased freight costs and tighter margins for importers and exporters.

FAAN, however, maintained that the revision is necessary to strengthen operational efficiency and funding for airport improvements.
