The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has dismissed reports circulating on social media that claimed there was an attempted aircraft hijacking at Akure Airport in Ondo State.
In posts shared on its official X account on Monday, March 16, the aviation authority clarified that its earlier press statement regarding a security operation around the airport had been misrepresented.
“There was no part of the press release that mentioned or suggested a ‘hijack.’ Please refer to the official statement for accurate information,” FAAN stated.
The authority also addressed a viral photograph that had been shared alongside the claims, explaining that the image was not connected to any event at the airport.
“This image is entirely false and does not represent any incident at Akure Airport. No gory scene occurred as depicted. Kindly refer to the attached press release for clarity,” the agency added.
FAAN’s clarification follows a security operation carried out around the airport environment on Sunday.
The operation led to the arrest of four suspected bandits after security operatives received information about suspicious persons sighted close to the airport’s perimeter fence near the Eleyewo community.

According to FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the security response involved multiple agencies working together to secure the area.
During the search operation, some individuals reportedly attempted to escape.
However, four suspects were eventually apprehended by the security team and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further questioning.
The aviation authority commended the cooperation between aviation security personnel, the military, the police and local security groups, including the Amotekun Corps and community vigilantes, whose efforts contributed to the arrests.
FAAN also noted that the Federal Government has intensified efforts to strengthen security at airports across the country.
Through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, measures such as the installation of modern perimeter fencing and the upgrade of security infrastructure are being implemented to prevent unlawful access and other security threats.
The authority assured travellers and nearby communities that airport safety remains a top priority.
