The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to shut the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for about 25 days to carry out repairs and resurfacing.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the authority said the temporary closure was tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, pending final confirmation.
FAAN attributed the planned shutdown to damage affecting parts of the runway, including potholes and widespread surface cracks worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
The rehabilitation work will cover pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of damaged sections to improve the runway’s safety and operational condition ahead of the expected surge in air travel during the Christmas period.

The project will also include extending the runway to accommodate wide-body aircraft as passenger and flight traffic to the region increases.
According to the authority, the expansion is expected to enhance passenger comfort and make air travel through the airport more convenient.
FAAN urged passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure to contact their airlines for information on flight changes, schedules and alternative arrangements.
It added that consultations with relevant stakeholders would continue, with the confirmed closure and reopening dates to be announced once finalised.
The authority thanked airport users for their patience and cooperation during the planned rehabilitation exercise.
