Fani Kayode Slams Peter Obi Over NADECO Remarks Sparks Fresh Political Row

A fresh political controversy has erupted following a scathing response by former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, to comments made by former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.

The exchange, which played out on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), highlights deepening divisions among political figures over Nigeria’s democratic history and the legacy of past struggles against military rule.

Obi had earlier stirred debate with a post in which he criticised some individuals who were active during the pro-democracy era under late military ruler, Sani Abacha.

In his remarks, Obi suggested that some of those once regarded as defenders of democracy now appear to have fallen short of those ideals.

“Yesterday defenders of democracy, today’s destroyers… what an irony of history,” Obi wrote, questioning the consistency of some past activists.

Reacting on Friday, Fani-Kayode issued a strongly worded rebuttal, accusing Obi of attempting to undermine the legacy of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a group widely credited with resisting military rule in the 1990s.

He defended the sacrifices of NADECO members, many of whom, he said, faced imprisonment, exile, and persecution in their fight to restore democratic governance in Nigeria following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.

Fani-Kayode also alleged that Obi had no significant role in resisting military rule at the time and criticised what he described as attempts to reinterpret historical events.

The former minister further referenced key figures from that era, including Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, widely believed to have won the annulled 1993 presidential election, and Ibrahim Babangida, the then military head of state who annulled the poll.

He argued that the sacrifices made during that period should not be diminished, noting that many Nigerians lost their lives or endured hardship in the struggle for democracy.

The exchange also drew attention to current political alignments, including the involvement of figures such as David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola within opposition circles, further intensifying the debate.

While Obi has not publicly responded to Fani-Kayode’s latest remarks, political observers say the clash reflects ongoing tensions as key actors position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Analysts note that beyond personal criticisms, the debate underscores broader questions about Nigeria’s democratic journey, historical accountability, and the role of past and present leaders in shaping the country’s political future.

For many Nigerians, the memory of the pro-democracy struggle remains deeply personal, with calls for civility and constructive dialogue growing louder amid increasingly heated political discourse.
