Farmer-herder clashes: Ban movement of cattle from North to South – Ganduje

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has demanded the enactment of a law abolishing the movement of herdsmen from the North to the other parts of Nigeria.

Ganduje argued that unless this is done, the country might not witness an end to the herdsmen-farmers violent clashes soon.

The Kano governor stated this while speaking with journalists after a lunch he and other All Progressives Congress governors met with President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina state,

He spoke against the backdrop of the heightened tension in some South-West states, especially Ondo and Oyo, over quit notices issued to herdsmen.

Ganduje noted that if the movement of cattle is not stopped, there will be no end to farmer-herder conflicts.

He said such action by the South-West states against the herdsmen would also stop the problem of cattle rustling.

Ganduje disclosed that his administration was already constructing a settlement for herders in a forest near Kano’s border with Katsina.

He said the settlement will have houses, a dam, an artificial insemination centre, and a veterinary clinic.

The Kano governor said, “We are building a Ruga settlement in Samsosua forest, our border with Katsina and we have succeeded in curtailing the effect of banditry in that area.

“So, we are building many houses, we are constructing a dam; we are establishing a cattle artificial insemination centre, we are establishing a veterinary clinic and already we have started building houses for herdsmen.

“My advocacy is that we should abolish the transportation or trekking of herdsmen from the northern part of Nigeria to the middle belt and to the southern part of Nigeria.

“There should be a law that will ban, otherwise we cannot control the conflicts between herdsmen and farmers and cannot control the cattle rustling which is affecting us greatly.”
