Fashion Icon Valentino Garavani Dies At 93

Valentino Garavani, the iconic Italian fashion designer whose name became synonymous with elegance, haute couture and timeless glamour, has died at the age of 93.

Garavani died on Monday, January 19, 2026, according to a statement released by his foundation. He was surrounded by close companions at the time of his death. No cause was disclosed.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential designers in modern fashion history, Valentino built a global fashion empire defined by meticulous craftsmanship, refined silhouettes and his instantly recognisable signature shade, known worldwide as “Valentino red.”

His creations were worn by royalty, world leaders and generations of film and style icons, earning him a reputation as one of couture’s most enduring masters.

Born in Voghera, northern Italy, in 1932, Valentino trained in Paris before returning to Rome, where he founded the Valentino fashion house in 1960.

His international breakthrough came in the early 1960s when Jacqueline Kennedy, then former First Lady of the United States, became one of his most prominent clients, propelling the brand onto the global stage.

Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Valentino dressed celebrated figures including Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Princess Margaret and Queen Paola of Belgium.

His work helped shape the image of luxury fashion in the post-war era and earned him numerous honours, including some of Italy’s highest national awards for cultural contribution.

Valentino retired from active design in 2008 following an acclaimed farewell runway show in Paris but remained a revered presence in global fashion, frequently honoured for his lasting influence and legacy.

The Valentino foundation announced that Garavani will lie in state at the fashion house’s headquarters in Rome on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, and Thursday, January 22, 2026.

His funeral service is scheduled for Friday, January 23, 2026, at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome.

Tributes have continued to pour in from designers, fashion institutions and cultural leaders worldwide, many hailing Valentino Garavani as a defining force in global couture whose vision and influence will endure across generations.
