FCT Council Polls: APC Coasting to Victory — Minister

FCT Minister of State Mariya Mahmoud says the All Progressives Congress (APC) is heading into the February Area Council elections with the unity and organisation needed to win.

Mahmoud spoke on Friday, January 9, at the Apo Community Town Hall during the flag-off of the APC’s e-registration exercise. She said the party’s cohesion is a key sign of its electoral readiness.

In a statement released by her media aide, Austine Elemue, the minister said, “The cohesion in our party shows that we are coasting to victory in next month’s Area Council elections.”

She described the digital registration drive as part of the party’s push for inclusion and internal strengthening, noting it goes beyond simply signing up new members.

“This exercise is not just about increasing numbers. It is about strengthening our party structures, updating our membership database, and ensuring that every member has a voice in shaping the party’s and the nation’s future,” Mahmoud said.

The minister praised APC leaders for adopting technology to improve openness and participation, especially among young people.

“The party is founded on progressive ideals, emphasising broad-based participation, internal democracy, and responsive governance,” she added.

Mahmoud also encouraged residents across the Federal Capital Territory, including men, women, youths and persons living with disabilities, to enrol or update their records, stressing that wider participation strengthens democracy.

“Your involvement will strengthen the party and deepen democracy,” she said.

Reaffirming support for President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, she said a strong grassroots base is essential to the party’s success.

“A strong party relies on grassroots involvement, and this e-registration marks a key step forward,” she noted.

The FCT Area Council elections are scheduled for February 21, 2026. Campaigns, which began on September 24, 2025, are expected to end at midnight on February 19, 2026.

INEC has also published the list of candidates for the election, featuring nominees from 17 political parties that successfully uploaded their nomination forms.

Voters will elect officials into 68 positions: six chairmanship and 62 councillorship seats across Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali and Abaji area councils.
