The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has warned residents to refrain from the sale, purchase, and use of firecrackers, knockout explosives, and other unauthorised pyrotechnics as the festive ‘Ember-months’ approach.
In a statement released on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the police expressed concern over the rising circulation of these hazardous items across the territory. They highlighted the public safety risks, including injuries, fire outbreaks, and disruption of public peace, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and persons with underlying health conditions.
“Firecrackers pose serious safety hazards and can provide opportunities for criminal elements to mask unlawful activities. Residents are strongly urged to comply with this advisory,” the statement read.

The FCT Police said officers have been directed to enforce the ban and warned that violators would be arrested and prosecuted. Citizens were also urged to remain vigilant and report anyone involved in the sale or use of prohibited pyrotechnics.
Similar measures have been announced by the Imo and Plateau State Police Commands, which have prohibited the sale, distribution, and use of fireworks and knockouts to prevent injuries, fires, and disturbances during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
