FCT Polls: ADC Condemns Wike’s ‘War’ Declaration Against Anti-Tinubu Candidates

The African Democratic Congress has condemned remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of making reckless and inflammatory statements by reportedly declaring “war” against candidates opposed to President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming FCT council elections.

The party’s response came in a statement issued on Monday, February 16, by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in which the ADC warned that such language could inflame political tensions ahead of the February 21 polls.

The ADC maintained that Nigeria is a constitutional democracy where the people decide who leads them, not the president or any minister.

“We consider the Minister’s declaration of ‘war’ against so-called anti-Tinubu candidates not only irresponsible, but dangerous in the current fragile atmosphere of our nation,” the statement read.

“At a time when Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship, insecurity and deep political distrust, the last thing the country needs is inflammatory rhetoric from those entrusted with public office,” the party said.

The ADC accused Wike and the All Progressives Congress of trying to intimidate voters, saying such tactics revealed growing nervousness about their level of public support.

The party stressed that sovereign power belongs to the Nigerian people and warned against any attempt to treat public office as personal property.

“If Wike and the APC are confident in their performance, they should submit themselves to the verdict of the electorate,” the statement added.

The ADC vowed to resist any effort to undermine the will of voters through lawful and constitutional means. It also pledged to mobilise democratic institutions and civil society organisations to protect the integrity of the ballot.

The party insisted that no declaration of war or abuse of office could silence the voice of the electorate.

The statement comes as political tensions rise ahead of the FCT Area Council election scheduled for Friday, February 21, with parties intensifying campaigns and trading accusations in the final stretch before polling day.
