The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has unveiled a series of activities to commemorate the 2025 World AIDS Day, with free HIV counselling and testing set to headline this year’s observance.
The administration says its approach for 2025 will prioritise community participation and shared responsibility in ending HIV/AIDS.
In a statement released on Thursday by Mrs. Bola Ajao, the Special Assistant to the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the Secretariat announced that this year’s theme—“Overcoming Disruption: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response”—reflects a renewed push to strengthen prevention and treatment efforts despite emerging health challenges.
As part of the programme, a high-level one-day symposium will take place on December 2 in Abuja, bringing together stakeholders across the health sector.
World AIDS Day, observed globally every December 1, is dedicated to raising awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic, honouring lives lost, and mobilising international action toward eliminating the virus.
Director of Public Health, Dr. Dan Gadzama, said the Mandate Secretary has instructed the Secretariat to intensify sensitisation efforts and align with global initiatives aimed at reducing HIV transmission.
He noted that the symposium will serve as a platform for policymakers, healthcare professionals, development partners, and people living with HIV to share experiences and refine strategies for a more effective HIV response in the FCT.
“The event aims to review progress, exchange practical knowledge, and develop new approaches to improving services,” the statement said.
It also emphasised the need for a unified message that encourages support for individuals affected by HIV and boosts public confidence in available treatment options.
Highlighting the significance of the commemoration, the State Programme Coordinator for HIV/AIDS, STIs and Viral Hepatitis, Dr. Fatima Daggash, said World AIDS Day provides an important moment for reflection and renewed commitment.

She explained that the gathering would allow for frank discussions about current gaps in service delivery and the need for realistic, long-term solutions to sustain gains in the fight against HIV.
As part of this year’s activities, residents of the FCT will have access to free HIV testing and counselling, as well as community outreach programmes designed to promote early diagnosis, connect people to care, maintain viral suppression, and tackle stigma.
According to the statement, the FCTA is urging residents to participate in the events and take full advantage of the free health services available.
“Early testing and open conversations are crucial to ending HIV/AIDS in the FCT,” the Secretariat stressed.
