FG Bows to Pressure, Suspends Controversial Doctors’ Pay Circular

The Federal Government has backed down on a controversial directive that reviewed the allowances of medical and dental officers in the public sector, following strong backlash from health professionals.

The circular, issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission and dated June 27, 2025, drew widespread criticism from major health bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

The NMA had issued a 21-day ultimatum on June 2, demanding the withdrawal of the circular and warning of a nationwide strike if their concerns weren’t addressed.

NMA President, Prof. Audu Bala, condemned the circular, saying it introduced new provisions without consensus and undermined the welfare of healthcare professionals.

“The circular contains provisions that were not mutually agreed upon and which undermine the remuneration and welfare of medical professionals,” he said.

With the ultimatum set to expire on July 23, tension had been building across the sector.

However, on Monday, July 21, NARD President Dr. Tope Osundara confirmed that the circular had been suspended to allow for further dialogue.

“Arising from the meeting chaired by Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy with his capacity as the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Salaries today, it was agreed at the implementation of circular with reference number SWC/S/04/S.218/III/646, dated 27 June 2025, should be suspended to allow for further consultation with various professional associations.

“So, it has been suspended for further negotiations,” Osundara stated.

The suspension eases immediate pressure on the healthcare system and paves the way for more inclusive discussions on doctors’ pay and working conditions.
