FG Dismisses US Embassy Alert, Says Abuja Remains Secure

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians and the international community that the Federal Capital Territory remains secure, dismissing concerns raised in a recent travel advisory issued by the United States Embassy.

The US advisory had cautioned its personnel against non-official travel to government and military facilities in Abuja, citing “general global developments.”

However, in a statement on Monday, June 23, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said there was no specific threat to warrant alarm, and that the capital remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike.

“Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike,” Idris stated.

“Nigeria’s security agencies are working around the clock to ensure the continued safety and protection of all residents of the FCT and across the country.”

He emphasised that the US advisory was not based on any immediate security concerns in the capital.

“We understand that the US advisory is based on general global developments and does not reflect any imminent or specific threat within the FCT,” he said.

“We reiterate to all diplomatic missions, investors, development partners, and the general public that there is no cause for alarm.”

According to the minister, Nigeria’s security architecture remains proactive, responsive, and equipped to deal with emerging threats across the country.

“Our security and intelligence agencies are monitoring developments across the country and are fully prepared to respond decisively to any threat,” Idris said.

He urged the public to go about their lawful activities without fear, while also remaining alert and supportive of security efforts.

“We encourage citizens to conduct their lawful activities without fear, while also remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities,” he stated.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining Abuja’s status as one of the safest capital cities in the world.
