FG Finalises Review of ‘Future Ready’ School Curriculum

The federal government says it has completed a wide-ranging review of school curricula covering basic, senior secondary, and technical education.

According to the government, the review targets two key goals: cutting down on overload and improving the quality of learning.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, confirmed that the exercise was carried out with the support of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and other stakeholders in the education sector.

A statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the 31st of August, 2025, by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, explained that the revised framework seeks to balance subject loads with a stronger focus on practical knowledge.

“At the primary level, pupils in Primary 1-3 will offer 9-10 subjects, while those in Primary 4-6 will take 10-12. For Junior Secondary School, the range is 12-14 subjects; Senior Secondary students will take 8-9; and technical schools will offer 9-11 subjects,” the statement said.

Prof. Ahmad noted that the redesigned curricula aim to trim excess content, create more room for meaningful learning, and keep education relevant to the demands of modern society.

The government praised the collaboration of all partners involved and pledged that the new system will be rolled out with strict oversight to ensure smooth and effective adoption in schools across the country.
