FG: Influencers, Journalists Must Stop Giving Terrorists Publicity

The Federal Government has called on journalists and social media influencers to avoid amplifying the activities of bandits and terrorists, warning that excessive publicity can help violent groups spread fear and undermine national unity.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the appeal on Monday, July 6, at the maiden edition of the Arewa Media Summit held in Kano.

The summit was organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Public Enlightenment, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz.

Idris said the media plays a vital role in protecting national cohesion and should avoid becoming a platform for violent groups seeking attention.

“The media has an indispensable role in denying violent extremists the publicity they seek while promoting unity, resilience and hope,” Idris said.

He also emphasised that democracy thrives when government operates transparently, citizens participate responsibly and the media performs its constitutional duty with professionalism, fairness and integrity.

The minister observed that technological advancements have transformed the information space, making it possible for almost anyone with a smartphone to publish content.

However, he warned that the same technology has accelerated the spread of fake news and disinformation, posing a threat to public trust and national stability.

In his remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Public Enlightenment, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, said the summit was convened to deepen engagement between government, citizens and the media while promoting accountability, responsibility and ethical communication.

He also urged social media influencers to be mindful of the influence they wield, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

“Social media influencers who command enormous audiences must use their platforms responsibly by verifying information before publication and avoiding content capable of creating division, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Abdulaziz said.
