The Federal Government has urged media organisations and public institutions to accurately present the official title of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in all publications and communications.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Friday, May 8, by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who expressed concern over repeated errors in how the President’s designation is reported.
Akume emphasised that the correct and complete appellation must be used at all times.
“For the record, the correct and official appellation is: His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the SGF stated.
The clarification followed what the government described as a misrepresentation of the President’s title in a national newspaper publication on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.

According to the SGF, such mistakes are unnecessary and could be avoided with proper verification before publication.
He urged journalists, editors, and institutions to pay closer attention to official titles in order to prevent what he called “avoidable and embarrassing errors”.
Akume also advised that accurate information regarding official designations can be obtained through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s verified communication channels.
