FG Launches Digital Postcode System For Nigerian Addresses

The Federal Government has introduced a new digital postcode system designed to make it easier to identify locations across Nigeria and improve access to services.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch in a post on X on Thursday, October 1, urging Nigerians to search for and start using their assigned postcodes.

The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service, gives every addressable building in the country a unique 11-character digital code.

The system uses Geographic Information System technology to provide a precise reference for locating buildings and other addressable locations.

According to Tijani, the new system could improve the way businesses connect with customers, help families provide precise locations during emergencies and assist government agencies in delivering services to communities.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” he said.

Tijani said reliable digital addressing was also important to the Federal Government’s plans to expand economic participation and support President Bola Tinubu’s target of building a $1tn economy.

“As we work towards (President Bola Tinubu’s) ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations,” Tijani said.

The minister urged Nigerians to visit the official Digital Postcode website, postcode.gov.ng, to identify their codes and share them with relatives, friends and businesses.

The system identifies locations across five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building. Each addressable building is assigned a unique code based on these classifications.

NIPOST had previously said the digital postcode system would provide a standardised location reference for a range of services, including deliveries, emergency response, public service delivery and e-commerce.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s digital addressing infrastructure by providing a common system for accurately identifying locations across the country.
